Air Tightness Testing
We show how the home performs under both normal and exaggerated pressure conditions to reveal areas of air infiltration/exfiltration, as well as how the thermal and pressure boundaries of your home are performing.
This image shows the most common areas where air and moisture flow into, out of and within the home - a phenomenon called Stack Effect.
Atmospheric pressure forces air into the house. As the air warms, it migrates up through the house through openings between floors and wall assemblies.
Eventually, conditioned air will reach the attic where it can add moisture to insulation, rot framing members, produce mold, and create ice dams by warming the roof deck. Stopping stack effect is crucial to a maintaining a comfortable and efficient structure, as well as reducing heating/cooling costs.
We test for air tightness is through the use of a blower door. This device slightly depressurizes (sucks air out) the building and exaggerates leakage areas for diagnostic purposes. Important information is derived from this test. For example:
